Koreans Protest U.S. Beef imports

Currently, many Koreans have been protesting US beef imports, because of the fear that they may contain Mad Cow Disease. The beef Korea is importing is 30 months old, and is not being probably regulated, neither by the Koreans nor the Americans. Efforts to create some sort of Korean FDA have been stalled. During the protests, of which accurate numbers are hard to obtain, many have so far been jailed, and at least one dead.

Want to waste resources? Ask the French!

The French are going to be the first western country other than the U.S. to have a permanent military base in the middle east. Yes, the Brits have some airplanes on an American owned airbase in Qatar, and yes they also have a naval presence in Bahrain, but that doesn’t really count. What and Why would the French do such a thing? Didn’t they learn from all the ire that the military bases brought to the Americans? Is President Sarkozy the French version of Bush?

If the French are trying to become an alternative to the U.S., they are going to have to try a lot harder than one military base with only 500 personnel. The U.S., excluding Iraq, has 40,000 soldiers around the Middle East. One reason, which is a reasonable one, is that they are also selling civilian nuclear technology to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with a cost of 6 billion dollars. That ought to bring money to the much needed French economy, which by the way, is doing terrible. Expected growth for the French economy is going to be at 2% or less! Plus, those 500 soldiers are probably going to be guarding the new nuclear facility, whether directly or indirectly.

Overtime though, will the French be able to afford those troops? What if they have to increase those numbers? What if this just exacerbates domestic problems? The French have always gone through periods where they try to reassert themselves internationally, and some of the right-wing frenchies love military power, so perhaps this will help in a weird way, domestically for Sarkozy.

A Real Scare? Or another farce?

Would the Iranians really do this? Mahmoud Ahmadinejad denies Iranian boats would ever do such a thing. Now, its not that i believe him, but i really just don’t trust this administration. Let’s say the Iranians would do such a thing. Did the command come from the top? Some mid-level commander? or was it just some crazy speedboat captain? If it came from the top, what would they gain from such an action? If they did out right attack the U.S. ship, then they know it would be instant war, and i don’t think the Iranians are ready for that yet. What would scaring the U.S. ships do? The only practical thing i can think of is that perhaps they were using their speedboats as a distraction for some other Iranian operation.

I really just don’t buy the threatening posture story.

Could this?

Really scare this?

Hillary gets Emotional, and other irrelevant information

In recent headlines, Hillary Clinton was apparently near tears when expressing how she felt about our country. It was all over CNN and other various news outlets. My question is this; How is that relevant news? You don’t think most, if not all candidates, deeply care about this country? Why is this making headlines over other important news, like actually reporting the rare times when a presidential nominee actually says what they would do, specifically, as president? Instead of, you know, when they talk about their “feelings”. Oh, and btw (by the way) candidates, if any of you ever read this, you can’t say you are the candidate for change, and then proceed to not tell me how you are going to change it.

Instead of showing Hillary getting emotional over and over again, and instead of playing Barack Obama snippets all day long, why not actually show more of what is being said by other candidates. The only time i really heard of any news agency reporting what Chris Dodd and Joe Biden said was when they made their “dropping out of the race” speech. Perhaps if the news reported what they said, they’d still be around. Even Edwards doesn’t get proper exposure. Yes, the news mentions him a lot, but they never show him actually giving a speech personally. They always show Hillary and Obama giving their speeches. What gives media?

So, to attempt to correct this, i am going to post one interview of John Edwards. I found one of him as recently as 1/6/08, but it doesn’t seem to load, so this is one from last month. Still pretty recent. It doesn’t give too much information straight out, but hey, what candidate ever does?
