South Korea elects Buisnessman; Does great monkey impression.

Lee Myung-bak has won the Korean election for President by as much as 25 points; Even though you might not be able to pronounce his name, his win is an important one, for both practical and ideological reasons. Why is he so popular, and whats his story?

As with most successful buisnessmen, he may have some skeletons in his closet. Currently he is under investigation for corruption. The case was previous closed, but has been reopened with new evidence that links him to an investment firm that stole millions of dollars from their investors. Since Lee Myung-bak has won the election, he can’t be prosecuted until after his 5 year term ends. Lucky him.

He does have extensive experience in both business and politics. He was involved in real estate, which earned him as much as $40 million dollars, and was also a Hyundai executive. Being Mayor of Seoul showed his more “green-friendly” side, by restoring the Cheonggyecheon stream in the center of Seoul. The cost will eventually make it a multi-billion dollar project, which made a lot of people along the river loose their homes, and most environmentalists say that it does nothing for the environment. But it does looks pretty.

His domestic stance is what he calls “Korea 747 Vision”, in which he wants to double the GDP of Korea to $40,000 and make it the 7th largest economy. He also calls for more deregulation of the economy, lower corporate taxes (no surprise), typical market tycoon stuff. Internationally, he wants to pressure North Korea into creating free trade zones, which he hopes will encourage more cooperation between the two Koreas.

So what does electing this man say about Korea today? Most are afraid of stagflation, and with the cost of living rising, Koreans today don’t feel that a growth of 3-5% a year is enough. Lee Myung-bak has promised a return to the days of 7%+ per year, and with his background in business, most feel he can provide that. He may be corrupt, but if he can make himself all of that money, why can’t he do that for Korea too?

The Gift of Not Giving

Hey loyal readers (all 5 of you), here is a special treat from one of my friends. Its funny, its lewd, and its right up your alley, so enjoy!

On the Can with Dan the Man!!

Whats up internet. My name is Dan and I’m quite the man. I’m 22, I live in queens with my mother, I’m an undergrad with a shitty retail job and I’m the most single thing you’ve every seen. If you’re thinking, “Oh God, another internet asshat with nothing better to do than ramble all day about crap he doesn’t know”, then yes. That would be me. I’m all that and then some. “On the can?” you ask. Well yes I am in fact “on the can”. I’ve decided to do all my posting whilst taking shits. My reasoning is simple. This is the only place in the goddamn world where I can get some motherfucking peace and quiet. Noooobody wants to be anywhere near you when you’re dropping a deuce. Here on this porcelain throne my thoughts run free like bunnies in a meadow.

OOOOOkay, so I ‘ve got my laptop, mug of coffee, some pretty explosive bowels and here we go!!!!

Lets start off with a fun topic. PRESENTS!!!!!!! Christmas, birthdays, babyshowers, weddings, house warmings, you name the occasion and there’s bound to be gift giving involved. Every holiday has its own type of present. A while back I got to thinking. What if there was a gift you could give that would be appropriate for every holiday? What if there was gift that any and everyone would love to have? What if there was a gift that was relatively inexpensive yet thoughtful and meaningful at the same time? Could such a thing exist? After countless hours off shitting and pondering I have found it! The perfect present!! The Gift of Not Giving!!!

The Gift of Not Giving is a rather easy concept to understand. You don’t get me anything so I don’t feel obligated to get you anything. I mean come on, we all love getting gifts but giving them fuckin sux.

The process of gift giving:

  1. Crap when was his birthday again?
  2. How much should I spend?
  3. What the hell does he want?
  4. Does he even like scented douches?
  5.  Should I buy a card??
  6. What the hell was his name!?!?

Mutual non-giving is beautiful thing. You save money, brain power (from not having to remember countless dates), and oodles and oodles of time from not having to drive out the mall just to buy some stupid oversized clearance rack item that they’re probably just going to re-gift anyway. So the next time you find yourself alone and presentless on your birthday, appreciate the fact that your friends cared enough not to care.

This has been On the Can with Dan the Man.

A big vocabulary helps end world hunger?

apparently at FreeRice.com, the more words you know, the more rice they give. Why not give it a try, and not only help the poor, but also expand your vocabulary.

Facebook; If it says it there, it must be true.

i was inspired by recent conversations, and this news article, ::::, to write about the implications of Facebook.

****BEWARE THE RANT*****

How does one know when they are “offical” anymore? With most interactions on colleges being “casual”, whether or not both people see it that way, how can you tell? FACEBOOK. That is the answer. All of your friends read it, and pseudo-stalk you. Yes that statement is true, and you all know it. But it also gets far more confusing. Some people put “its complicated”, or “open relationship”. What is the point of that?

Facebook is a great medium to either simplify things, or it can also be used to expand something with a greater explanation. “Its complicated” does not do either. If its complicated, why don’t you take the time and figure out what is it, and stop confusing everyone else? Its basically saying you can’t make up your mind, but although you may want others to back off, you don’t want to push anyone away either. How does that make sense? i have no fucking clue, ask them.

“Open relationship”. Huh? If its an open relationship, why do you need to declare it? Its like declaring tax-free money. The point of an open relationship is that it doesn’t really mean anything. You can see other people, and thats fine. Why bring attention to the fact you can’t be in a closed relationship? Why let others know of something meaningless and temporary? Its like getting a little bruise on your arm and pointing it out to anyone who passes by. You want everyones’ attention, and want everyone to ask themselves questions. How long will it last? Will they fall in love and become official? If you are in an open relationship, you are what we call on the relationship ladder “being single”. Stop being attention whores.

However, despite all this, i check out the main news feed every time i log on, and see who is with whom, and what new pictures you have. I guess it all works then huh? Well anyway, i gotta go check facebook 12 more times before i go to bed, so bye!
